Open All Hours
Well, perhaps not all hours but certainly long hours. I know that I’m going to need to hire some staff … coffee shop hours are long and if I want to still be a halfway-adequate parent (as well as preserve my sanity) I’m going to need help. I want to open the store early, because this town is something of a bedroom suburb to a nearby major city and I know lots of people like to stop for coffee first thing in the morning for the drive to work.
It’s not my ideal of a neighborhood hangout where I have regulars that come in, linger, chat, and make the store a home away from home, but I know that these take out orders have the potential to be be a big part of my trade at certain times of day. I’ve designed the layout of the store to ensure that the quick in and out orders don’t intrude on the less trafficed seating areas so that both sets of customers can be served conveniently and comfortably.
And I also know that we’ll be open late as a hangout spot, particularly once the performances start, so I can easily see us being open from, say, 6:30am till 11:30pm. Well, I can’t be at the shop for all those hours, so I’ll be hiring staff. I plan to hire a couple of full-timers if I can find them, but I’d like to make sure I have a good number of flexible part-timers too.
This is a college town, so I assume I’ll be hiring some students, and I know from experience that student schedules change from semester to semester. Ideally I’d like to have enough people willing to work flexible hours that I can rejigger schedules every so often rather than have to replace staff who suddenly can’t work their accustomed shifts.
Since the opening is more than a month away I figure that I still have some time before I need to advertise, but I know I’m going to have to start soon. I’ve never hired people before … this is going to be a whole new experience for me.
